About Us
Southern Cross Healthcare - caring
for more New Zealanders than ever
Southern Cross Healthcare is extremely proud to be an integral part of New Zealand’s wider healthcare system.
In 2020, we changed our name from Southern Cross Hospitals to Southern Cross Healthcare to reflect the fact that caring for the health and wellbeing of New Zealanders now extends beyond our hospitals, into community physiotherapy and rehabilitation, as well as personalised healthcare solutions for New Zealand workplaces.
We believe passionately that health in this country is worth protecting. Everything Southern Cross Healthcare does is about making sure we play the biggest part we can in making that happen. As a not-for-profit, we continue to look for ways to enhance and support the health and wellbeing of New Zealanders by reinvesting in modern healthcare facilities and employee development. We strive to use our capabilities and resources to make healthcare accessible to more people.

Our core services
Southern Cross Healthcare is New Zealand’s largest independent healthcare network. A nationwide family of joint venture and wholly owned hospitals; specialist centres; physiotherapy; rehabilitation; and employer health and wellness providers. From post-operative rehabilitation and pain management, to workplace-based vaccinations and mental health services, Southern Cross Healthcare’s focus is committed to better health for more Kiwis.
Private surgical hospitals
Southern Cross hospitals have been a trusted part of New Zealand’s healthcare system for over 40 years. We are proud to be New Zealand’s favourite private hospitals and through our wholly-owned and joint-venture partner hospitals, 86,000 people received surgical treatment in 2019.
Specialist centres
Our specialist centres are devoted to the diagnosis and treatment in specific areas of health. Southern Cross specialist centres include world class radiation and endoscopy facilities.
Community physiotherapy and rehabilitation
Over fifty-seven thousand people received physical rehabilitation and physiotherapy support from Southern Cross Healthcare joint venture partners in 2019. All services are delivered by healthcare professionals who are experts in their fields.
Workplace healthcare
In 2019, over ten thousand people received mental health support and 30,000 people received flu vaccinations through workplace contracts provided by Southern Cross Healthcare joint venture partners. Many more were supported with health checks and advice; coaching, mentoring and mental health training; return to work support following serious injury or cancer; and support during critical incidents.

What we bring to the community
Our care for New Zealand extends into Southern Cross’ social responsibility initiatives – doing our bit to drive environmental sustainability, contributing to research, and supporting the mental health of New Zealand children.
Pause Breathe Smile
We joined forces with the Pause Breathe Smile Trust and the Mental Health Foundation to offer a mind health programme at no cost to primary and intermediate school children. This programme is designed to help equip Kiwi kids with the essential skills they need to navigate the ups and downs of everyday life.

Sustainability
The Southern Cross Heatlhcare vision is to advance the health of New Zealanders, now and in the future, which includes actively seeking innovative ways to protect and look after our environment.

Southern Cross Healthcare is taking big steps, working with Toitū Envirocare, to measure, manage and reduce our carbon emissions across our national network of wholly-owned hospitals.
As a leader in healthcare, we are committed to ensuring the health and wellbeing of New Zealanders is our core focus, today and tomorrow for all future generations. Our hospitals are committed to meaningful change to protect and look after the environment; acknowledging our responsibility to act as kaitiaki to take care of our resources and the environment.
Our sustainability action plan has seven areas of focus for Southern Cross hospitals – waste reduction, energy and water efficiency, sustainable procurement, sustainable transport, energy efficient building, medical gases and employee engagement and empowerment.
